AI-powered Rock Sample Analysis for Geological Modeling

ADNOC faced challenges due to the slow, labor-intensive, and inconsistent manual process of microscopic rock description by petrographers, compounded by expertise loss due to retirement. They partnered with IBM to develop an automated process using AI (cognitive image recognition, NLP, regression) trained on rock images. This solution analyzes samples rapidly and consistently, ensuring interpretation remains at the expert level. The goal is to generate more deterministic data for more accurate subsurface models to support multibillion-dollar field development decisions.
